The Wiltshire Human Givens Centre - Press Releases

7th November 2007

This press release is also available as a Word document here.

On Wednesday 21st November the new Wiltshire Human Givens Centre will open its doors to the public between 5pm and 9pm for its opening and press launch at Bridge House, Stallard St, Trowbridge, BA14 9AE.

The centre is the brainchild of local psychotherapists Alec Stansfield, Bindi Gauntlett and Alan Rankin who are keen to bring the very real benefits of the highly effective and relatively new brief psychotherapeutic approach, known as the ‘human givens’, to as many people as possible.

Human givens (HG) psychotherapy originated in the UK only 10 years ago, but because of its practicality and effectiveness for a wide range of emotional distress (from severe depression, anxiety, trauma to addiction and even psychosis) thousands of health, educational and welfare professionals across the country, and increasingly overseas, now incorporate it into their work.

The human ‘givens’ are what we are all born with, our innate emotional and physical needs, combined with the resources Nature gave us to get those needs met. If our needs are not being met, or met well, we suffer distress, and so do those around us. By incorporating this understanding with the most up-to-date psychological knowledge, new discoveries of its own and a range of effective, proven therapeutic techniques (taken from different schools of therapy, including cognitive behavioural therapy – CBT) this holistic approach is able to help a wide range of people, often remarkably quickly.

Alec Stansfield says: “The numbers of people suffering from mental health problems continues to rise in the UK, and we really wanted to do something about it – too many people are suffering needlessly. We have a wealth of skills that we know are highly effective for helping people suffering from depression, anxiety and stress, panic attacks, anger problems, post traumatic stress, phobias, low self esteem, relationship issues, addictions, obsessive behaviours, self harming, poor sleep or poor concentration, and we want to put them to the best use possible.

“We feel the launch of this centre is an important step in tackling the current crisis in mental health care. It will provide a valuable addition to the local community at a time when the NHS is struggling to provide appropriate, affordable and accessible mental health care. The centre will also be providing data for a national research program into the effectiveness of the human givens therapeutic approach.” Alec, Bindi and Alan will be running the new centre together, providing individual therapy sessions as well as giving advice and training to organisations.

The launch will include refreshments and a series of 15 minute talks on subjects such as: ‘Applications in social and health care’, ‘Improving the workplace’, ‘Issues for young people in education’, ‘Helping with family life’. The guest speaker will be psychologist Ivan Tyrrell* – co-founder, with Irish psychologist Joe Griffin, of the human givens approach – and principal of MindFields College, which teaches the practical applications of this knowledge for emotional health and clear thinking to thousands of professionals every year. He will give a short presentation entitled ‘The human givens approach and its relevance in today's society’.

The event is open to all and will be of interest to anyone with friends or family suffering from depression or anxiety, or any other emotional distress, as well as those interested in social and health care, education, mental health, personal development and improving relationships at home and at work. People can drop in any time between 5 and 8 pm – the centre is right next to the Trowbridge railway station and there is plenty of nearby parking.
